The day I picked out Bamm Bamm

Bamm Bamm is my Chiweenie. He is half Chihuahua and half Dachshund. He weighs about 8 pounds and he is completely black in color.

About three and a half years ago I decided I wanted to start looking for a pet because at the time, I didn't have a partner. I needed some sort of companionship in my life and I wasn't finding it in people, so I thought I would try a dog. Originally I wanted a medium sized dog, but my friend Josh told me, when he found out I was looking for a dog, that his mom's dog was going to have puppies. When I asked what kind they would be he informed me of what they were and I was hesitant at first. Did I want a puppy? Did I want a small dog?

You hear all sorts of things about small dogs being yappy and being hard to potty train and such but I do have some experience in taking care of a small dog. Growing up, my family had a full bred, papered Miniature Dachshund, and his name was Poopie. Actually his real name was Killer, but my dad dubbed him Poopie as he had accidents in the house and from then on everyone started calling him that. Poopie was not a good dog, and that is as much our fault as the breeders we got him from. We didn't teach him manners like we should have and ultimately he had to be euthanized because he got aggressive and bit people very badly. The aggressiveness sometimes happens when there's a lot of interbreeding to keep the line pure.

So, I was hesitant to take on a small dog as I didn't want to deal with all of that again. But I thought about it and being that is has been over 20 years since the ordeal with my last dog, and this one wouldn't be full bred I thought I would give it a shot. My friend even decided to get one of the other dogs in the litter so they could play and grow up together.

We set off toward Josh's mom's house when the dogs were about 4 weeks old. All I knew at this point was that there were 2 girls and 5 boys in the litter. Josh and I were getting first pick and I was very excited to see the different colors and personalities of the puppies. Upon arriving, sadly one of the girls in the litter suffocated under the mother and passed away. We also learned that the runt of the litter (a boy) did not survive. Josh had said that he wanted a girl, so that left me with 4 boys to choose from. I walked over to the blanket area they were being kept in and noticing that one in particular was all black I picked him up and I knew right away, without even playing with the others, that this was my puppy. I mean, how can you say no to this face?
Bamm Bamm is on the left, and his sister Pebbles is on the right. Funny side note -- at this age they kind of remind me of Falcore from the movie The Never Ending Story.

It was love at first sight. I love my Bamm Bamm. He is very well behaved and isn't yappy at all. I ended up adopting his sister Pebbles as well when they were about 4 months old because my friend wasn't able to provide the care she needed. Today they are both very healthy and happy adult doggies. They are approximately 3 and a half years old. I love Pebbles just as much as I love Bamm Bamm and I look forward to spending many years with them.

  1. What darling pups! Your writing is very clear, but you might want to tweak this a little bit to engage your readers and get them to share your feelings. Have you heard of "show don't tell" in writing? Ask me about this in class.
